According to statistics from China Customs, output and sales for Haiyan county’s export-oriented companies both saw rise in January 2011, with exports for steel or iron products including fasteners and stainless steel pipes up 64.5% to $ 47.22 million. Exports for some companies saw sharp rise of more than 100%. For instance, exports for Jiaxing Xinyue Standard Part increased 156% over the same period of 2010.

The continuing recovery of steel or iron products helped strengthen Haiyan’s fastener manufacturing confidence, one of the pillar industries of Haiyan. “Export prices for Haiyan’s fasteners show greatly different from that in the past. The prices keep growing steadily as demand from the global markets increase,” Mr. Ni Ding, the assistant secretary general of Zhejiang Fasteners Industry Association said.

However, there are many uncertainties that might affect exports for 2011. Some industry analysts noted that, on the one hand, the further appreciation of RMB and the growing production cost might prevent China continuing to take advantage of its low-cost production, especially for Haiyan’s fasteners, clothing and the like traditional industries, which will be confronted with great challenge; on the other hand, the turbulent political situations to some extent might have impact on Haiyan’s exports in 2011 as well.
